UNITED STATES - Government-Sponsored Research Links

US Gealogical Survey - Web site to help locate places.  This is especially helpful for finding out what counties a city is in.

Library of Congress - Check out the LOC to see if someone published a book on that rare surname!

National Archives & Records Admin - This is the part of the US government that maintains the census records and other US goverment archives and records.

Social Security Administration - FAQ for the SSA, including instructions on how to obtain Social Security application forms (SS-5) for deceased individuals.  Here are some brief notes:

    * If the individual died prior to 1936, then no SS-5 is available, as the Social Security program did not exist.
    * If the individual died between 1936 and 1955, then it is possible that the person had a SSN assigned, but not absolutely necessary.
    * If the individual died after 1955, then it is highly likely that they had an SSN assigned.

The Social Security Death Index contains about 75% of all persons who died who had a SSN.
This form is always useful when it can be obtained, as it can list items like birthdate, father, mother with maiden name, workplace, address, etc.  It is a document that is always worth getting if it is possible, but it has become a bit pricey.  I recommend sending a copy of the individual's death certificate, if the person is not in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI).  Otherwise the SSA may choose to not grant your request.  That's happened to me a couple times.  SSDI lists can be found at ancestry.com and many other free internet sources, no payment should be needed to look at an SSDI.
