Starting Places for Genealogy Research

If you're interested in genealogy, I strongly recommend talking to all of your older family members (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc) first.  Once you've talked to everyone and have put together information on the living, then it's time to start with the deceased.  To do that, I highly recommend these four websites.  They give you access to a wide variety of records, published both by businesses and by individuals.  They also put you in touch with other researchers, and I can attest to being helped, and to have helped others, thru these websites.

Cyndi's List - One of the most widely-acclaimed web sites, Cyndi has thousands of web links grouped by category.  Most of my on-line findings have come one way or another through this web site.

RootsWeb - One of the oldest web sites.  RootsWeb is a way to connect to others searching for ancestors.

Family Search Internet Genealogy Service - A web site sponsored by the Mormons, who microfilm millions of pages of old records each year, and it's all available at Family Research Centers around the US.  An on-line search utility and the Personal Ancestral File software is available free of charge.

Ancestry.com - On-line search utility can help identify some records free of charge, other records require a subscription.  Many records are available, including census and newspaper, and the serious researcher should consider a subscription.
