Marion Cemetery

Marion Cemetery is NE of the Delaware Ave and Vernon Hts intersection, south of Marion's downtown.  It is across the street from St Mary's Cemetary and the Harding Memorial.  Marion Cemetary is the home of the famous Merchant family rotating granite ball.

This webpages features pictures and notes of certain headstones in the Burke and Sens Lineage lines.  Pictures were taken of a variety of headstones at Terrace Bank and Vesper Grove.
Marion Cemetery - Terrace Bank - Lot 30
Notes

These notes are from the lot card, and my comments are within brackets [].  The lot card, as one might expect, doesn't fully match up with all the headstones in the lot.

7.  Adaline A Ballantine, May 20 1895, 70 yrs, Heart Failure [Next to John Ault's headstone, presumably this is the wife of John Ault, whose headstone says Father.  May have been Adaline Nancy Gorton, daughter to Col Hezekiah Gorton and Alpha Capron.]

8.  Mrs Mary Ault, Dec 18 1898, 86 yrs, Nervous Exhaustion [Mary Catharine Gorton, daughter of Col Hezekiah Gorton and Alpha Capron, married Hiram M Ault]

9.  Hiram M Ault, Mar 19 1901, 69 yrs, Kidney Trouble [Married Mary Catharine Gorton on 20 Mar 1851, children as of 1899 were Eudora Ault (married Benjamin Bieber), Emma L Ault, and Harry Gorton Ault]

16.  Gorton [Not clear what this refers to.]

17.  J.C. Norton 1851-

18.  Olive M. Norton 1841- [May have been the daughter of Col Hezekiah Gorton and Alpha Capron, and sister to Mary Catharine Gorton.]

19.  Marietta E. Gorton, Aug 19 1851  - 1 year  [see the notes below regarding Elizabeth Ballantine]

20.  John H. Gorton, Aug 24 1851 [Possibly John Hezekiah Gorton, born 1851 and died young.  He was a son of Joseph Wheaton Gorton and Elizabeth Ballentine].

22.  Frank E Maass, Sep 20 1943, 70 yrs, Cerebral Hemorhage, Concrete V

23.  Aileen Crumley, 68 years, Oct 8 1954, Arterio Sclerotic Heart Dis - Concrete Box

Some pictures could not be clearly matched up with the lot card.

1.  Ault Marker - Next to plot numbers 2, 3 and 10.

2.  Elizabeth Ballantine - Elizabeth Ballantine died on Aug 13 1851, so she may be the mother of Marietta E Gorton, number 19 in the lot, who died Aug 19 1851, and the two were buried together without formal mention of the daughter.  It would appear also that a twin brother John Hezekiah Gorton, number 20, also died.  The husband would have been Joseph Wheaton Gorton.

Most of the notes are pulled from the lot card, headstones, and the book "The life & times of Samuel Gorton: the founders & founding of the republic & a hist. of the col. of Providence & R.I., with a gen. of Samuel Gorton's desc.", by Adelos Gorton. 966p. 1907.  Between the three sources, there is plenty of room for guesswork and improvement.

And yes, you're right, I should probably put a chart together that shows how all these people are related.

Marion Cemetery - Terrace Bank - Lot 30
Pictures

The following pictures were taken 3 Sep 2002 at Marion Cemetary, Marion, Ohio.  Files are 40-80KB.  They are all of the headstones that I could find in Terrace Bank Lot 30.  The outline of the lot is 91' x 83' x 67.5' x 49.2', so it is rather large, about 1/10 of an acre.  The lot number is next to each picture title, where it could be located.
Marion Cemetery - Vesper Grove - Lot 19
Notes

1.  Carrie Beiber, 22 Dec 1878, 13 yrs, consumption.  [No headstone found.]

2.  Infant Bell Beiber, 7 Jan 1883, 3 mo.

3.  Peter Beiber, 8 Sep 1885, 63 yrs, Chr. abscess  [Peter S Bieber married Rachael McClure, and was the father of Benjamin, Sarah (married David LaRue) and Mary L (died young).  He was the owner of Bieber's Mill, and was frequently mentioned in the Marion papers.  He and his wife are buried next to a Bieber marker.  The inscriptions are barely readable.]

4.  Mrs. Rachael Beiber, 8 Aug 1891, 58 yrs, cancer

5.  Carrie L. Bieber, 19 Feb 1901, 20 yrs, Operation  [I'm a bit unsure, but this may be the daughter of Benjamin Bieber and Eudora Ault.  She may have died in Columbus.]

6.  Endora [sic] Beiber, 23 Dec 1925, 72 yrs, Uremic Poison  [Eudora married Benjamin Bieber.  She died from injuries after she was hit by a car.]

7.  Ray A Bieber, 12 Jun 1929, 51 yrs, Cerebral Hemorhage.  [Ray was a vaudeville performer, son of Benjamin and Eudora.  He died in Dayton, where he lived with his wife Jessie.  No children are known.]

8.  Benjamin M Beiber, 19 Jul 1933, 82 yrs, Nephritis, Steel Vault.  [Benjamin outlived his wife and all his children except one, according to his obituary.  He was also frequency mentioned in Marion papers.]

9.  [Same entry as 7 on the lot card, but the actual plot has Clarence Beiber's headstone.]

10.  Inf. of David S. LaRue, 3 May 1890, 3 days.  [No headstone.  David married Sarah Bieber, daughter of Peter.]

11.  William Burke, 57 years, 15 Jun 1944, organic heart disease, Con Box.  [No headstone found.  William is likely the son of Michael Joseph Burke and Anna Berle, who are buried across the street in St. Mary's Cemetary.  Plot 11 does not appear on the lot card, other than in the text.]

The plot card also has this person listed.

James Dorward - 22 Oct 1883, Infant.  [No lot number is assigned for him, and no headstone could be found.  I am unsure of how the name Dorward can be associated with the Bieber name.]

Several pictures could not be matched up with the information on the lot card.

Bieber Marker - Appears to be in the middle of the lot.

Clarence Bieber - Clarence is the son of Benjamin and Eudora.  He was married, worked for the railroad, and apparently did not have any children.

Pictures

The following pictures were taken 25 May 2003 at Marion Cemetary, Marion, Ohio.  Files are 30-110KB.  They are all of the headstones that I could find in Vesper Grove Lot 19.  The lot is about 25' x 30'.  This information is from the lot card.  My notes are in brackets [].

Not that I'm hung up on spelling, but the lot card uses 'Beiber', whereas the usual spelling is 'Bieber'.
